Read, Write, Format Excel 2007 and Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 Files
Provide R functions to read/write/format Excel 2007 and Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 file formats.
Readme
An R package to read, write, format Excel 2007 and Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 files
The package provides R functions to read, write, and format Excel files. It depends on Java, but this makes it available on most operating systems.
Install
Stable version from CRAN
Or development version from GitHub
Common Problems
This package depends on Java and the
rJava
package to make the connection between R and Java seamless. In order to use the xlsx
package, you will need to:Batchoutput Xls 2 5 6 0 Mm
- Ensure you have a
jdk
(Java Development Kit, version >= 1.5) installed for your Operating System. More information can be found on Oracle's website - Ensure that the system environment variable
JAVA_HOME
is configured appropriately and points to yourjdk
of choice. Typically, this will be included in yourPATH
environment variable as well. Options and system environmental variables that are available fromR
can be seen withSys.getenv()
- Particularly on UNIX systems, if you continue experiencing issues, you may need to reconfigure
R
's support for Java on your system. From a terminal, use the commandR CMD javareconf
. You may need to run this as root or prepended withsudo
to ensure it has appropriate permission.

To write a data.frame to a spreadsheet
The package has many functions that make it easy to style andformalize output into Excel, as well.
Issues/Mailing list
To report a bug, use the Issues page at: https://github.com/colearendt/xlsx/issues
If you are wrestling with the Java dependency, there are some very goodalternatives that do not require Java. Your choice will vary depending on whatyou are trying to accomplish.
Acknowledgements
The package is made possible thanks to the excellentwork on Apache POI.

openpyxl attempts to balance functionality and performance. Where in doubt,we have focused on functionality over optimisation: performance tweaks areeasier once an API has been established. Memory use is fairly high incomparison with other libraries and applications and is approximately 50times the original file size, e.g. 2.5 GB for a 50 MB Excel file. As many usecases involve either only reading or writing files, the Optimised Modesmodes mean this is less of a problem.
Benchmarks¶
All benchmarks are synthetic and extremely dependent upon the hardware butthey can nevertheless give an indication.
Write Performance¶
The benchmark codecan be adjusted to use more sheets and adjust the proportion of data that isstrings. Because the version of Python being used can also significantlyaffect performance, a driver scriptcan also be used to test with different Python versions with a toxenvironment.
Performance is compared with the excellent alternative library xlsxwriter
Read Performance¶
Performance is measured using a file provided with a previous bug report and compared with theolder xlrd library. xlrd is primarily for the older BIFF file format of .XLSfiles but it does have limited support for XLSX.
![Batchoutput xls 2 5 6 0 5 Batchoutput xls 2 5 6 0 5](https://images4.programmersought.com/829/0a/0a54bf69a06a80a173ba05e6202feaa5.png)
The code for the benchmark shows the importance ofchoosing the right options when working with a file. In this case disablingexternal links stops openpyxl opening cached copies of the linked worksheets.

One major difference between the libraries is that openpyxl’s read-only modeopens a workbook almost immediately making it suitable for multipleprocesses, this also readuces memory use significantly. xlrd does also notautomatically convert dates and times into Python datetimes, though it doesannotate cells accordingly but to do this in client code significantlyreduces performance.
Parallelisation¶
Batchoutput Xls 2 5 6 0 6
Reading worksheets is fairly CPU-intensive which limits any benefits to begained by parallelisation. However, if you are mainly interested in dumpingthe contents of a workbook then you can use openpyxl’s read-only mode andopen multiple instances of a workbook and take advantage of multiple CPUs.
Batchoutput Xls 2 5 6 0
Sample code using thesame source file as for read performance shows that performance scalesreasonably with only a slight overhead due to creating additional Pythonprocesses.
